Why It’s Important to Celebrate Pride

On June 28, 1970, the United States celebrated Christopher Street Liberation Day which was the first anniversary of the Stonewall riots. It was considered the first Gay Pride march in United States history. During this event, participants received very little resistance from spectators which was a far cry from the events of the riots that happened the year before.

Years later, countless nations around the world celebrate Pride Month as a way to honor sexualities and identities across the spectrum. In the year 2020, here are some reasons why we still celebrate pride today:

1. It Celebrates History

Gay people didn’t just popped out of nowhere and they certainly didn’t become a “thing” right when the Stonewall riots occurred. In fact, throughout history, several people from the community have either had their identities erased; conveniently “forgotten” by history; or were simply forced to hide themselves to avoid facing backlash. Pride aims to encourage individuals today to embrace their heritage and to embrace their identities head on.

2. Highlights the contributions made by the LGBT community

Speaking of having certain identities conveniently erased, did you know that some of the most brilliant minds throughout history have made significant contributions that many of us are still using today? No? Ask Alan Turing, Sally Ride, Alan Ride, and many more.

3. Emphasizes that love goes beyond gender and sex

Last and certainly not the least, one very significant aspect on why it is important to celebrate Pride is to spread the most important message of all: That love transcends barriers and carries across the spectrum of human identity. Whether you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, asexual, or have yet to fully identify yourself, pride month serves as a gentle reminder that you are somebody worth loving and that you deserve human rights.
